Tattersalls Announces Spring Mixed Sale

There’s a new sale on the 2014 calendar, and it’s right around the corner. Tattersalls today announced plans to conduct a mixed sale at the Meadowlands on Sunday, May 18.

The new sale, named the Meadowlands Spring Mixed Sale, will feature racehorses and two-year-olds in training, according to Tattersalls manager David Reid. Entries for the main catalogue will be taken through April 22.

“I’ve had a lot of calls and emails in recent weeks from owners and trainers looking to buy horses, and just as many from people looking to sell,” Reid said. “There’s a void in the sale calendar at this time of year, and with so many race meets starting up, demand is certainly out there.

“We already have a good number of commitments for some pretty serious racehorses, and hopefully others will follow.”

Reid said he also hopes that owners will step up to sell two-year-olds in training at this sale, as the time of year and the approach taken will be different than ever tried before. It offers several new features aimed at promoting that segment of the market.

There will be a special training session offered at the Meadowlands for two-year-olds entered to sell. It is tentatively planned for either Friday, May 16 or Saturday, May 17.

Consignors who wish to do so may train their two-year-olds at that time and have official times for the last quarter or eighth-mile published and available to prospective buyers. Videos from the training session will be placed on the sales company’s website and shown at the sale.

“The pinhooking business in Thoroughbred racing (where buyers specifically purchase yearlings for re-sale as two-year-olds the following spring) is really a significant aspect of their market, and a very lucrative one for both sellers and buyers,” Reid said.

“I don’t believe it will happen overnight… I think it’s a market that will need developed, but if an owner in this business has a well-bred two-year-old that’s training impressively, they would be very surprised at just how much that horse could sell for. It’s an untapped market, and it’s one that we plan to make available on an annual basis at this sale.”

Reid also noted that the date for the Meadowlands Summer Mixed Sale has been set for Sunday, July 27, the weekend of the Hambletonian eliminations.
