This Saturday (March 9), McGhee’s Mile in Aiken, S.C., will hold the fifth annual Bruce McGhee memorial harness races.
The 13-race card will host mostly two and three-year-old pacers and trotters representing such sires as Dejarmbro, Pet Rock, and Full Count. Trainers will include many from Ohio, such as Jeff Nisonger, Ken Holliday, and Garry Martin.
Roger Huston will be ‘The Voice’ behind the microphone.
The day will begin with a carriage parade and a charted pony cart race of local drivers. Aiken residents will turn out in droves to tailgate, picnic and cheer the horses to the finish line.
A historic horse colony, many disciplines are represented and figure prominently in the town history. Polo, Thoroughbred and Standardbred training, eventing and steeplechase are among the disciplines. Mexican horse dancing (baile de caballos) is performing the halftime show.
