Carol Rankin Passes

Funeral services were held Monday, March 30 in Sydney, NS for Carol Rankin, wife of prominent Cape Breton horseman Douglas 'Sonny' Rankin. Carol passed away Wednesday, March 25 in hospital at Sydney

Rankin passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after an eight-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Rankin was a member and past president of the ladies division of the Sydney Curling Club and past president of the Provincial Innkeepers Guild. She retired in 2007 after a successful career in financial services.

Rankin worked at the Sydney racetrack for several years and with her husband was an avid race fan.

Sonny, who is a starter at Northside Downs, also trains standardbreds at Donmar Farm, and won 2,258 races before retiring.

Rankin was survived by son Ralph Matheson and daughter Suzanne Donovan, and mother Agnes MacNeil.

Carol was a sister-in-law to William (Callie) Rankin and Donald Rankin, Jr., Darlene Rankin Costello, Donna Rankin Nevelle, and Mary Lou Rankin.
