Grand River Raceway patron Zbyslaw (Mike) Michalak won the $3,000 final of the Winter Wednesdays

Handicapping Tournament on March 25.

The Elora, ON track hosted 110 finalists for the championship, in which players selected the winners of races two through seven at the simulcast track of their choice. A hypothetical $2 win and place wager was applied to each selection.

Michalak’s Meadowlands bankroll of $81.30 earned him the $1,500 grand prize. The Fergus, ON resident is a regular competitor in the track’s handicapping contests and represented Grand River Raceway at the 2008 TROT National Handicapping Championship at Woodbine.

Rounding out the top five were: Rob Purdy ($750); Gary Elford ($360); Dave Purdy ($240); William Crowther ($150).

Live racing opens at Grand River on April 13. The track’s first Geek Squad Handicapping Tournament of 2009 kicks off on April 20.
