The Harness Horse Youth Foundation summer camp to be held at Vernon Downs will take place from
July 12 – 16, 2011. The five-day format will provide lots of opportunity to groom and drive horses, learn about careers with horses, as well as join in fun activities related to standardbred horse racing.
The camp is open to young people between the ages of 12 and 14 as of January 1, 2011; no previous horse experience is necessary. Participants and staff will stay at the Vernon Downs Hotel and meals will be provided by Vernon Downs as well. The cost for the entire event, including all food and lodging, is $150.
“It is always a pleasure to work with the Vernon/Tioga team setting up the camp” explained HHYF Executive Director Ellen Taylor. “American Racing – Tioga Downs Inc. is always one of the first on the list for yearly sponsorships, the staff is always eager to arrange the details, and the horsemen and women who volunteer are very enthusiastic, too.”
Also scheduled to visit the track and attend the races on July 16th is the regional 4-H Horse & Pony group under the direction of 4-H Animal Science Educator Kristi Cranwell.
Those interested in applying should download an application from hhyf.org or contact the HHYF office at 317-867-5877. The deadline for submitting applications is May 15.
