On Thursday, February 27, the Hanover, Bentinck and Brant Agricultural Society (HBBAS) announced its new general manager.

The Hanover, Bentinck and Brant Agricultural Society (HBBAS) is pleased to name Steve Fitzsimmons as its new general manager, effective March 3, 2020.

Fitzsimmons has a strong business background in both the sales and marketing fields from the automotive and publishing sectors. He is also a well-known hockey broadcaster and has been the play-by-play voice on Rogers TV of the OHL champion Guelph Storm for the last 19 seasons.

A longtime Hanover resident, the 46-year-old married father of two is currently serving his second term as a councillor for the Town of Hanover. In that role, he has been the town’s representative on the Hanover, Bentinck and Brant Agricultural Society Board, as well as on the Hanover Raceway Board for the past five years.

Fitzsimmons’ family is also no stranger to the harness racing industry, as his father raced horses for many years at a variety of ‘B’ tracks in Ontario, including Hanover Raceway. Steve and his wife Dawn are also horse owners, being current clients of both TheStable.ca and Bright Future Racing.

“The Hanover Bentinck & Brant Agricultural Society is excited that Steve has accepted this position with us. We are confident that the Society, the Hanover Raceway and its stakeholders will benefit from the passion and enthusiasm Steve is bringing to this job. We very much look forward to working with Steve going forward,” said Adam Chalmers, president of the Agricultural Society

For Fitzsimmons, he is excited to join the HBBAS team.

“This is a very unique opportunity for me,” said Fitzsimmons. “My family raced horses at Hanover Raceway when I was a kid and some of my favourite childhood memories are of grooming my dad’s horses at the track. I understand very personally the proud tradition and legacy of what Hanover Raceway means to people, both in the industry and to fans.

“I’m very grateful to the Agricultural Society for their belief in me. I’ve long admired the great work and care the agricultural society puts into their annual fair. I look forward to being a part of that annual tradition of showcasing local agriculture. I also look forward to working with the many stakeholders involved with Hanover Raceway, to be able to help continue to make it a great place to enjoy with your family and friends, as well as to race at.”

Steve will begin his new position on Tuesday, March 3, and can be contacted at 519-364-2860 or [email protected].
