Johnston Retires From Clinton Raceway

On Sunday (Dec. 8), Clinton Raceway will raise a toast to assistant race secretary Kathy Johnston, thanking her for 35 years of service to horse people across Ontario and wishing her well in her coming retirement.

“She has three qualities that I don’t have: She’s very pleasant to people on the phone, was always very accurate in her work, and nobody ever got mad at her,” said race secretary Ian Fleming of his years working alongside Johnston.

When Johnston first stepped into the role 35 years ago, the race office served Clinton Raceway exclusively. In 1995, The Raceway at Western Fair District was added, and presently includes draw day responsibilities for Dresden Raceway, Flamboro Downs, Georgian Downs, Grand River Raceway, Hanover Raceway and Hiawatha Horse Park. As a result, Johnston has had the opportunity to speak with and meet horse people from across the province.

“I just enjoyed it all, and met and talked to great people,” said Johnston. “It’s just been a great industry to be a part of.”

After she wraps up her career on Dec. 23, the Clinton resident is planning a winter getaway and looking forward to spending more time with the new man in her life.

“I just had a grandson born in September, so I’m going to be a part-time babysitter next September when my daughter goes back to work,” said the proud first-time grandma.

Stacey Smith-Glanville and Russ Gourlie will take over Johnston’s responsibilities when she locks the race office door for the last time later this month.

“She also did a good job of training people,” said Fleming of his long-time colleague. “We’ve got some good people in place.”

Johnston’s retirement celebration will take place at the Huron Fish and Game, 278 Alma Street in Clinton, Ont., on Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. All are welcome to join the Clinton Raceway staff as they salute Johnston and share 35 years of harness racing memories.
