Heavyweight Clash Sunday At Rideau

When Yves Tessier’s National Debt returned to Rideau Carleton Raceway after competing in the Guardian Gold Cup and Saucer at Red Shores Charlottetown, little did he know Guy Gagnon had a surprise: three-year-old gelding The Light Speed. What evolved has been a fierce rivalry between two horses and two trainers, week after week, over the last four months. With 14 wins each this year and five each in head-to-head meetings, the stage is now set for their final confrontation in 2021, which will headline the Boxing Day (Sunday, Dec. 26) card in the nation's capital.

“National Debt has had his way as our top pacer since 2019," said Peter Andrusek, racing manager at Rideau Carleton. "I’m not going to say there is a dislike here, however they are both extremely competitive and more is at stake than just purse money. Rarely is there an atmosphere of a Game 7 overtime in racing, but this is a culmination of a rivalry that will settle the debate as to who is best.”

The Light Speed and National Debt couldn’t be farther apart on the age spectrum. Most preferred pacers are usually in the five- to seven-year-old range – that is generally the pinnacle of a horse’s career.

In Guy Gagnon’s corner, The Light Speed is a three-year-old by a relatively unknown Québec stallion, Moon Beam. This speedy sophomore, has had an incredible season, finishing on the board in 22 of 24 starts. In a COVID-shortened season, he has 14 wins and over $87,000 in season earnings for owner/breeder Michel Nolette.

The Yves Tessier corner features François Morin’s long time heavyweight National Debt, who remarkably still packs a heavy punch at the advanced age of 10. He has 14 wins as well this year and almost $80,000 in earnings this season. On Dec. 5 this versatile son of All American Native with over $760,000 in career earnings won his 80th career race.

The Light Speed and National Debt square off in the $10,500 Preferred Handicap Pace, which is programmed as the second of 14 races on Rideau Carleton's closing day card. Post time is 6:30 p.m. EST.
