Ron Wilson Passes

Ronald Allen Wilson of Brookside, Colchester County, N.S., passed away on December 7 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, N.S., at age 84.

Born in Truro, Ron was a son of the late Earl and Freda (Roode) Wilson. In his earlier years, he had been employed with NS Power and CIL Agromart, and was an ice maker at Truro Curling Club. He had been involved in numerous sports: hockey, baseball and curling. In later years, he was an avid bridge player and attended seniors dancing five nights a week.

He was best known for being a driver and trainer of Standardbred horses, racing predominantly at Truro Raceway but also campaigning at various tracks throughout the Maritimes and at Pompano Park in Florida for two winters. He amassed 520 wins as a driver and 102 as a trainer before retiring in 2007.

Surviving are his son, Stephen; daughter, Donna Wilson (Toby MacDonald); grandson, Jesse; sisters, Marion Marsh and Ruth Smith; and brothers, Kenneth (Norma) and David (Eleanor). He was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine (Newson), and his brothers-in-law, Steven Marsh and Al Smith.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit, N.S. A celebration of life will be held Monday (Dec. 16) from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Bible Hill Village Hall. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Bible Hill Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to a local SPCA or a charity of choice.
