Longtime harness racing participant John M. McClure passed away on Monday, Nov. 27, 2023 at age 97.
John was an owner, breeder, trainer and driver at different stages of his life. He started training and driving at fall fairs, Elmira Raceway and Orangeville after building a horse barn and track in 1966 on the family farm. His most memorable horses were Southwind Vavoom and a part ownership of Powerful Chris. He passed his love of harness racing onto his sons Bill, Jim and Lormer, and two of his grandsons Bob and Ryan.
Beloved husband of Betty Dodds (d. 2022) and loving father to Mary (Ron), Bill (Michelle), Jim (Barb) and Lormer. He also has eight grandsons and one granddaughter, and 10 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Rd., Georgetown on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023 from 6 - 8 p.m. Service will be held at Jones Funeral Home on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023 at 11 a.m.
