The Canadian chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association (USHWA) voted in a new executive at its annual meeting held on Tuesday, Nov. 16.

Outgoing president Ryan Clements (Off and Pacing/Catch Driver game developer) nominated Tony Elliott for the lead role with the chapter, a nomination met with unanimous approval.

Elliott is a former USHWA Youth member who has matured out of the category, and not only by turning 22. He was hired as racing manager at The Raceway at Western Fair District this fall, succeeding Greg Gangle. Elliott had previously worked as assistant GM at Hanover Raceway and Clinton Raceway. The lifelong harness racing participant has quickly made a name for himself as a promoter of Ontario grassroots racing and a manager attentive to bettors and horsepeople alike.

"I am honoured to take on the role as president of USHWA’s Canadian chapter," said Elliott. "Our chapter brings a lot of passion and drive to our industry, with the common goal of seeing it grow. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such talented individuals towards the betterment of the sport."

Chapter secretary Sydney Weaver was also acclaimed in a new executive position, becoming chapter vice president. She is a licensed groom, Standardbred owner/breeder, award-winning writer and public speaker, who steps into the VP role previously held by Hall of Fame journalist/editor Dave Briggs, who did not reoffer.

The newest chapter secretary is Trey Colbeck, best known for his race calling and promotional work at Manitoba's Miami Fair. He joined the USHWA Canada chapter earlier this year, strengthening the national representation.

Chapter past president Melissa Keith was unanimously chosen as director for USHWA Canada at the upcoming 2022 USHWA national meetings in Orlando, Florida. The multiple award-winning journalist and Ontario Racing handicapper also served in the role at last year's online meeting.

The Canadian chapter of the U.S. Harness Writers Association was established in 2013, and welcomes new applicants who are contributors to harness racing media/communications.
