Dorothy Manges, matriarch of a harness family which dates back more than a half century, passed away following a lengthy illness on Saturday, November 13
, 2010 in Dover, Delaware. She was 85.
Mrs. Manges for 54 years was working alongside her late husband, Delbert Manges, a longtime leading driver at tracks in upper New York State and a member of the Western New York Hall of Fame before moving to Delaware to train and race standardbreds. Several of the Manges children have served in various capacities in harness racing.
Her son, Randy, is sales manager of the Lexington Selected Yearling Sale and a member of the U.S. Trotting Association Hall of Fame Committee. Her son, Brian, is an investigator for the Delaware Harness Racing Commission, while son, Gene, is a horseman at Western New York racetracks. Another son, Larry, was a well-regarded trainer-driver for a number of years.
Also surviving are eldest son Dean, an educator in North Carolina, and a daughter, Diana. Mrs. Manges is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A grave side burial was scheduled for Thursday, November 18 at Hollywood Cemetery in Harrington, Delaware.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial contributions be made to the Harness Racing Museum and Hall of Fame, 240 Main Street, Goshen, N.Y. 10924.
