General ‘Bubba’ Washington Jr. Passes

General Washington Jr., 77, aka ‘Bubba,’ a retired harness horseman and staple of the Monticello community, passed away on September 30 at Catskill Regional Medical Center.

Washington is the son of the late Bessie and General Washington and was born February 12, 1939, in Timmonsville, SC. Born to humble beginnings, he migrated north where he mastered his craft and love of horses and was noted as one of the top African-American harness racing drivers.

He is survived by his children, Brian, Deana (Dwight) Coy, Cedric, John (Sandra), Dennis, Debra (Patrick) Pinkney, Chad, Russell McNeil and Melinda Poole; 24 grandchildren; sisters, Jessie Abron, Kathleen (Bobby) Barrett and Theta (Vincent) Huggins; brothers, Moses (Denise) and James (Belinda); as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday (October 7) at the First Baptist Church, located at 29 Liberty Street in Monticello. The viewing is from 10-11 a.m. with the Funeral mass beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow. Repast at Ted Stroebele Recreation Center, 10 Jefferson Street, Monticello, NY.
