Peacefully at his residence in Portage la Prairie, longtime harness racing fan and owner Fred Burnick passed away at the age of 77 years
.
Affectionately known as "Freddie", he was the last surviving member of Sadie and Demetrio Burnick's children. Fred was born in Portage la Prairie and grew up attending North Memorial School, Central School and the Portage Collegiate Institute.
As a young man he began working for the Manitoba Telephone System, retiring many years later in the commercial department.
Fred had a wide range of activities that he immensely enjoyed. Harness racing was near and dear to him and he spent many days at Assiniboia Downs where he owned his own horse, Cara Way as well as following the Manitoba Harness Racing Circuit. Freddie played third base for the Portage Mercurys Ball Team, and a special highlight for him was on May 10, 2003 when the team was inducted into the Manitoba Soft Ball Hall of Fame. He was a strong supporter of young ball players and he followed their games with dedicated interest and attendance.
As well as sports, horse racing and Lincoln Continentals, Fred had a keen eye for antiques and model cars and trucks. Auctions and yard sales brought him much enjoyment as his inventory of sports memorabilia and classic collectibles grew continually.
Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by one sister Jean and two brothers William and Gordon.
Friends are welcome to attend a Graveside Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2009 in the Hillside Cemetery. Entry should be at the North Gate.
Please join SC in offering condolences to the family and friends of Fred Burnick.
