The Alberta Standardbred Horse Association has sadly announced that horse owner Gladys Schmitke passed away at the age of 83 on September 28

.

A keen businesswoman, Schmitke was strong, courageous, generous and a passionate animal lover. She had a special place in her heart for horses, as both she and her late husband, Manny, were involved with harness racing for many years. Some of the Schmitkes' more memorable horses were Outlawindependance, Oscar Road, Happy Spirit and Abouttolosecontrol.

Gladys was the consummate people person, as she made many friendships and maintained them over a lifetime.

A celebration of Gladys' life will be held at the Triwood Community Association (2244 Chicoutimi Drive N.W., Calgary) on Sunday, October 30 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of the donor's choice would be greatly appreciated. In living memory of Matilda Schmitke, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane.

Condolences may be sent here or can be posted at the bottom of this notice.

Please join ASHA and Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Gladys Schmitke.
