Trot Insider has learned that Sheila Attridge Burns (nee Green), former Standardbred owner and co-breeder of 1998 Older Trotting Mare of the Year Kewpie Doll B, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 24 surrounded by her loved ones at the age of 92.
Cherished and beloved wife of 64 years to Cecil Albert (Pat) Burns. Loving mother of Scott Andrew, Laura Maie, and Frances Sheila Abbasi. Loved by her grandchildren Jasmin, Kimberly (Tony), Sam and Kayley (Adam) and great-grandson Gage. Predeceased by brothers Dr. Francis Green (Bearnice Stevens), children Bonnie and Sally, and Dr. Lloyd Green (Mary Watson), children Gary and Peter. Also predeceased by her dear friends Betty Garbutt and Marion Copping. Daughter of Dr. Frances Teneyck Green and Laura Attridge Green, descendant of a United Empire Loyalist family in historic Stoney Creek, Ont.
Sheila attended Stoney Creek Public School and Salt Fleet High school, followed by a year in residence at McMaster University and a year boarding at Hamilton's Teachers Normal School. It was after moving to Timmins, Ont. to teach that she met her husband Cecil Albert (Pat) Burns, a geologist working at the McIntyre Mine. They were married at the Green family home in Stoney Creek in 1953 and have lived in Toronto, North Leaside since 1954.
Sheila was an exceptionally passionate volunteer and was a very active member of the Leaside Community. She devoted countless hours volunteering with the Canadian Blood Services, and at Northlea Public School, teaching English as a second language. She was a member of Northlea United Church, United Church Women (UCW) and served on many committees.
A remembrance service will be held in Northlea United Church, on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. with visitation from 1 p.m. The family expresses sincere gratitude for the unwavering support from Dr. Culbert and the staff of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Community Care Access Centre (CCAC).
