Longtime harness racing industry participant John David 'John' Sheldon of Kemptville, Ont. passed away peacefully in the Brockville General Hospital ICU after a short illness on Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, at the age of 89.

Born in Sunderland, Ont., John was a horse lover from when he could walk, leading him to train Standardbred race horses for 35 years: from taking him by train, transporting horses to California and back, to reside and train in South Mountain and Kemptville. John focused on preparing two- and three-year-olds for the races, but just one of many achievements was to win six races on one night at Rideau Carleton Raceway.

The love of the farm, the land and the animals never left him. From raising Belgian draft horses to llamas, donkeys and chickens, of all shapes and sizes, all the while with is faithful dog by his side and wearing his signature two-toned overalls.

After retiring, and when taking a break from planting trees and shrubs in his "park", he would enjoy afternoons at his cottage on the St. Lawrence River with his buddy Holly.

His entertaining story-telling to family and friends, and sense of humour with a twinkle in his eye, will be missed forever. He loved, and was loved.

Devoted and loving husband to Linda (née Farrier) for 43 fun-filled and interesting years. Dearly loved Dad to daughters Karla Mercaldo and Karen Henderson (Steven) and Grandpa John to grandchildren Tami, Ben, Michael, Melissa Leclair (Sacha) and great-grandchildren Hugo and Evelyn.

As per John's wishes there will be no service. A Celebration of Life will take place in the spring. In memory of John, donations can be made to the Prescott Food Bank or to your local food bank.

The family would also like to thank the wonderful nurses and doctors in the ICU at the Brockville General Hospital for showing such complete care and compassion in John's last days.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of John Sheldon.
