Sustaining payments for the 66th Little Brown Jug and the 41st Jugette are due February 15

. These are for foals of 2008.

And, there’s good news for owners of both 2011 Little Brown Jug and Jugette contenders.

As per 2010, race officials will be able to be much more flexible in splitting the Jug into eliminations. In a situation like the one that occurred in 2009, when there were 19 horses entered, the officials will be able to split the race into eliminations of six, six and seven rather than the ten and nine horse fields that officials had to do in 2009.

Also, starting in 2012 for the 67th Little Brown Jug, the maximum number of starters will be 24. This is a reduction from the current limit of 30 starters. Beginning in 2012, if more than 24 horses declare in to start, the field will be limited to the 24 horses with the highest lifetime earnings.

“This 24 limit puts everybody on the gate,” said Phil Terry, general manager of the Delaware County Fair. “We have been dealing with complaints in the past from trainers and owners whose horses were forced to start from the second tier.”

Also effective this year (2011) there will be no race-off for the Jugette Three-Year-Old Filly Pace. The Little Brown Jug Society board of directors voted that the winner of the second heat will be the Jugette champion.

The estimated purse for the 2011 Little Brown Jug is $650,000 and the estimated purse for the Jugette is $325,000. The Little Brown Jug will be raced on Thursday afternoon, September 22 and the Jugette Wednesday afternoon, September 21.
