Nasal discharge, fever, cough, fatigue...respiratory viruses are worrisome for trainers and can leave a lasting impact on a horse’s health and performance. Common respiratory viruses such as equine influenza, equine rhinitis viruses and equine herpes viruses have specific features that impact the airway in different ways. A basic understanding of these viruses, how to manage a horse infected by them and how to reduce the risk of infection can lead to improved health management and performance.

This FREE online webinar will provide an overview of the influenza outbreak in Alberta as a case study, followed by an understanding of the common equine respiratory viruses, their effect on the racehorse and their control through vaccination and biosecurity practices. Experiences with these viruses in Ontario’s harness racing industry will also be provided.
