Once upon a time very few females worked as grooms .It seems that back then nearly all caretakers were men and it is perhaps my imagination but it seemed like a lot of them were 'older' and frequently single types. I guess the nomadic life of travelling from track to track and living in tack rooms may have been a major factor. This old photo shows a couple of gentlemen in the shed row performing their duties.
