Sherwin 'Smiley' Edwards is making arrangements to travel to Italy to participate in an international amateur driving tournament hosted by the Italian National Amateur Drivers Association from July 15 to 17

.

The events will be taking place at Ippodromo Sant'Artemio in Treviso and Venice in Italy at the same time the country celebrates 150 years of independence.

Canada will be one of 12 countries represented in the tournament. Edwards received an invitation from Joe Faraldo, the president of the North American Amateur Drivers Association, who will represent the United States at the event.

Edwards participated in the C.K.G. Billings Harness Driving Championship Series in 2009 and 2010. Although the Canadian contingent consisted of only six drivers, Edwards finished as the top Canadian in point standings both seasons.

With 28 starts under his belt, he carries a record of 5-5-3, sporting a handsome 0.313 UDRS.

Upon Edwards' return, he has plans to form the Canadian Amateur Standardbred Drivers Association (CASDA) in order to increase Canadian participation in amateur racing in this country.

Standardbred Canada has given their blessing to this Canadian representative and will be posting a progress report of the results and events surrounding the event.

Edwards has stated that he is ecstatic about the opportunity and will do his best to represent Canadian harness racing abroad.

A black tie gala will be the highlight of the excursion on Saturday, July 16 to commemorate the event and Italy's 150 years of independence.

Please join Standardbred Canada in wishing Sherwin Edwards the best of luck at the international competition.
