With growing concerns over the condition of Summerside Raceway's grandstand, the city's mayor is calling for an emergency meeting with provincial legislators to bring their plans for the grandstand and the track itself to light.
The city will host the Canada Games in 2009 and the racetrack will be the venue for the opening ceremonies.
"The opening venue as it stands right now will be that dilapidated, leaking building that's falling into the ground," Coun. Brent Gallant told CBC. "Prince Edward Island will be the laughing stocks of the Canada Games to have hosted such an event with a facility such as that."
Although rumours are swirling that the province will shut down the track and downgrade the facility to a training centre as part of its upcoming gambling strategy, Summerside's Mayor Basil Stewart is confident that won't happen.
"If there's a suggestion at the end of the day from that, that this racetrack in Summerside be downgraded from racetrack to a training centre, there will be a blistering fight about it, I'll tell you that. And I'll be right out there in the front of it," said Stewart.
