World Record For Dennis In Old Oaken Bucket

Roland Mallar pupil Dennis took the second $75,560 division of the Old Oaken Bucket at the Delaware County Fairgrounds this afternoon in 1:53.3, a World Record clocking for three-year-old trotters over a half-mile track.

Via the victory, driver David Miller completed the sweep of the Bucket divisions.

Miller left from Post 4 with Dennis, a Lindy Lane gelding, and carved the fractions in :27.3, :56 and 1:25.1.

Dennis had started to pull away from his foes before the third stanza, and came home with a :28.2 final quarter mile for the multiple-length victory.

The 1:53.3 clocking was just one-fifth of a second short of the all-age trotting track record, put in last year by Mystical Sunshine in the Miss Versatility.

"He showed some ability last year at two, but this is icing on the cake," said Mallar. "He's as good as he's been all year right now."

Mallar said that Dennis will now head down to the Red Mile to contest some late closing events.

Spam Spade (driven by Andy Miller) and First Pleasurelane (Tim Tetrick) finished second and third, respectively.

Courtesy of a strong first-over move, Miller and Broadway Hall bay The Budster captured the first division of the Old Oaken Bucket.

Miller and the gelding got the job done for trainer Peter Foley in 1:56.2 -- a new lifetime mark.

The Budster sat fourth through the opening half, which produced fractions of :28.2 and :57.3. Gearing up in the third quarter, Miller and The Budster displayed a strong brush, grabbing hold of the engine before the 1:27.2 three-quarter marker. The Budster came home with a 29-second final quarter.

Foggy Lane K (driven by Charlie Norris) and Over Ruled (John Campbell) finished second and third, respectively.

"He's the type of horse that doesn't have any quit to him," said Miller. "He's not a real quick horse, but he doesn't have any quit to him. When I came first over, I wasn't worried at all -- I actually cleared pretty easily. From there on he just did the rest."
