On Saturday afternoon, three $20,000 Circuit Quebec Distinction events produced some unexpected performances by three-year-old trotting colts at Hippodrome Gatineau.
In the first division, Rambo Normand and driver Guy Gagnon pulled off an upset as they led the field through opening fractions of :30.1 and 1:02.1. After shaking off challenger Third L A (Rheo Filion) in a 1:33.1 third quarter, the Paolo Jutras trainee picked up the win in 2:03.3.
Hills of St Thomas (Stephane Brosseau) was second one length back and Let Me Dream (Normand Bardier, Jr.) was third.
In race three, Bullet Gabe pulled off another upset. Driven by Marcel Barrieau, the son of Quickdraw Chip led the field to the half in 1:02.3. At the three quarter pole, post time favourite Hesgotlegs (Robert O'Dwyer) pulled first up to capture the lead and eventually cross the wire by over seven lengths in 2:02.2.
Hesgotlegs was placed fourth for interfering with Tonnerre (Gilles Gendron) with his move at the half, giving second place finisher Bullet Gabe the win.
Stormont Saturn (Pascal Berube) was placed second behind the Gabriel Beaumont trained colt, and Tonnerre was placed third.
In the final division, Le Point prevailed with a wire-to-wire victory after three of his competitors including the favourite Don Corrado (Stephane Gendron) broke stride at the gate.
Driven by Rheo Filion, the Monte Hall sired colt posted panels of :30.1, 1:00.1, and 1:31.1 en route to a 2:03 victory for trainer Serge Nadeau.
Second place finisher Reve Normand (Guy Gagnon) broke stride in the stretch and was placed seventh, while Einstein L A (Stephane Brosseau) was placed second and Thunder Jag (Jasmin Gagnon) was placed third.
