All eyes were on a trio of $12,500 Champions Trot winners at Sudbury Downs on Saturday night.
The first division of the first leg was also the fastest with New Dice Please posting a 1:58.4 wire-to-wire victory in rein to Paul MacLean.
The six-year-old gelding posted the opening quarter in :28.1 with Indys Kylee (Gerry Belanger) sitting second on the outside. The son of Donerail pulled away from the pack through the following fractions of :57.4 and 1:28.2.
As the field turned for home, Armbro Edward (Justin Turcotte) closed the three-length gap, but New Dice Please held on for the win in 1:58.4 by half a length. Check Le Look (David Dowling) finished third.
New Dice Please has visited the winner's circle seven times this year and earned $66,870 for trainer Chris Beaver and owners Bill Manes, Robert Little of Rockwood, Paul Sabourin of Mississauga and William Cripps of Acton, Ont.
Charlie O Charlie (Gerry Belanger) stole the show in his split, winning in 1:59 for trainer Stacy Hohner and the Belanger Racing Stables of Barrie, Ont.
The five-year-old Sjs Caviar gelding, who sat in the pocket behind Zorgwijk Fortunate (Paul MacLean), made his move at the three-quarters mark, flying past the pacesetter with a :29.2 final quarter for the two-length triumph. Speedy Desperado (Wayne MacLean) rounded out the top three.
Charlie O Charlie's fourth win of 2008 brought his seasonal earnings to $30,770.
In his division, Rebar Man (Allan Hohner) sat patiently in third before sprinting home in :29.4 for the win in 2:00.4 by three-quarters of a length. Acrobate Car (Mike MacNeill) closed for second and the tempo setter, Connected Yankee (Keith Jones), was third.
The nine-year-old Malabar Man gelding, who is trained by Hohner for Emily Blondin of Dundas, Ont., picked up his third seasonal win. His 2008 earnings total $28,717.
