For those that don't think standardbred horse racing is a sport, just speak with top Maritime driver Todd Trites.

In an article on the website of Here, New Brunswick's Urban Voice, Trites opines that harness racing is in fact a sport, and that maybe it isn't accepted as such by those outside of the industry because of the gambling that is involved.

"The horses are amazing equine athletes. I'd compare them to anything," said Trites, who went on to state that the horses maybe can be compared to marathon runners.

"I think it's kind of old school," he explains. "But I think because there's gambling involved in it, it might not be considered a sport. A lot of people, when they think of their top 10 sports, horse racing wouldn't make it on to many people's lists."
