Stakes Galore At Fredericton

Fans attending the Labour Day matinee at Fredericton Raceway were treated to a terrific program which featured a number of top performers.

There were four divisions of the Williamson Memorial Stake for two-year-old pacers, with two divisions for the fillies and a pair for the colts and geldings.

Southview Spirit is now undefeated in four lifetime starts thanks to a 2:01 score in her $6,400 split for trainer/driver Gilles Barrieau. The daughter of Western Paradise now boasts $15,211 in earnings for owner/breeder Elwood Lawton and partner Arleen Harris of PEI.

P H Quick Chick took the other filly division in a career best clocking of 2:00.4 for trainer Dr. Trevin Shive and driver Todd Trites. The Quick Comeback filly has assembled a 2-2-0 record in five starts and a bankroll of $10,845 for owner/breeder Dr. James Shive of Shubenacadie, NS.

JSR Mr Big went gate-to-wire in the first split for the boys, winning in a time of 2:01.3 for trainer Earl Watts and driver Brian MacPhee. It was the third lifetime win for the son of Western Success, who is closing in on the $15,000 mark in earnings for owner Rodney Maclean of North Wiltshire, PEI.

Deep Finesse took the other division in 2:00.4, and in doing so extended his win streak to seven-in-a-row for owner/trainer/driver Phil Pinkney of Central Onslow, NS. The Western Paradise colt now owns an 8-1-0 record in 11 starts in addition to a $32,538 bankroll.

In other afternoon action, Abby Best took home top prize in the $4,760 Erwin Andrew Memorial Open Mares Series in a time of 1:58.2 for trainer Angus Maclean and driver Bernard McCallum.

It was the ninth win of the season for Abby Best, who hiked her lifetime earnings to $33,644 in the process for owner Travis Maclean of Rockwood, ON.

There were also two divisions of the Mildred Williams International Driving Series on tap this afternoon, with Carole Dumont and Stacy Chiodo celebrating wins.

Dumont clicked with Putnams Pride in a time of 2:04.1 in the opening split defeating Select Timber (Ann Curran) and Donbryn Master (Tammy Mac Kay).

Chiodo took advantage of a pocket trip in the second contest to win with Fern Hill Treasure in a time of 2:03. Bobs Birthday (Colleen Chappell) was second best and third prize went to Teeshaspitpony (Ambyr Mac Phee).
