The Minister responsible for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) Dan D'Autremont is congratulating the Saskatchewan standardbred industry on a successful racing season.
The 2008 standardbred season will conclude Saturday at Marquis Downs in Saskatoon. This year there were 16 days of racing in Yorkton and eight in Saskatoon.
"This past season of standardbred racing in the province can best be described as a season of growth," D'Autremont said. "There were more horses racing at the tracks, a strong fan base and a growing handle. I would like to congratulate the owners, trainers, drivers and exhibition associations that host the races on another great year."
The provincial government, through SLGA, provided $389,000 in operating grants for standardbred racing in the province and $234,000 for facility grants.
"These contributions are part of our government's overall commitment to sustainable long-term growth," D'Autremont said. "Horse racing in these communities plays an integral role in the entertainment industry, helping make these sites attractive places to live, work and visit."
"The past season was one of the best ever for standardbred racing in Yorkton," Yorkton Exhibition Association general manager Shaun Morin said. "There was a lot of excitement at the racetrack this year. The support we received from the government helped strengthen horse racing in Yorkton and we're already looking forward to an even better season next year."
