Red Riverboat and Scotty Pooh prevailed with identical clockings in their respective $35,000 Primary Pace divisions at Northlands Park on Wednesday night, but used different strategies to get the job done.
Red Riverboat and Gerry Hudon stole the show in the first division with a wire-to-wire performance in 1:57.4.
Leaving from Post 8, the Red River Hanover colt posted an opening panel of :28.1 before facing a first-over challenge in the form of Imbadimnationwide (Bill Tainsh, Jr.) through the following fractions of :58.3 and 1:27.1. As the field entered the stretch, Red Riverboat took off, picking up his second win in three starts by over a length.
Rotten Randy (Keith Clark) was second and Outlaw Mister Cool (Constance Kolthammer) finished third.
Hudon trains and co-owns Red Riverboat with Craig Stamp of Calgary and Gerry Gilroy of Edmonton, Alta.
Scotty Pooh rallied from off the pace to upset in the second split, also in a time of 1:57.4.
In rein to John Chappell, the 14-1 longshot sat in eighth position as Artless (Etienne Desomer) set the pace with early panels of :27.4 and :57.1. As the field passed the third quarter pole in 1:26.3, Scotty Pooh went three-wide and sprinted home for the five-length win.
Shouldabeensam (Keith Clark) finished second and Artless settled for third.
Scotty Pooh, a son of As Promised broke his maiden with the victory for trainer Doug Shaw and owner J Fred Lamont of Calgary, Alta.
In other action, Jeff Stone scored a training triple during the 10-race card.
The Didsbury, Alberta resident won with Lil Western Dude (1:58) in the second race. He also picked up wins aboard Lil Dudes Mach Up (1:56.3) and Sergeirachpaninoff (1:57.3) in the eighth and ninth races.
