The Ontario Harness Horse Association has notified the Ontario Racing Commission that they are appealing the recent race date rulings for Georgian Downs and Woodbine Racetrack.
"With the entry boxes already overflowing at most racetracks in Ontario, the reallocation and or deletion of race dates will exasperate an already difficult situation for horse people in this province," stated Jim Whelan, OHHA president. "Horse people are finding it increasingly difficult to find racing opportunities for their horses and need to have opportunities to race and earn revenue to manage their operations and care for their families.
"It is hard to imagine that with the tax breaks and slot revenues flowing to the industry that we find ourselves in a struggle not to enhance our industry but simply to sustain what we currently have. It is no wonder that horsepeople are outraged at this latest decision."
The ORC has set aside November 19 and 20 for hearing appeals on race dates. Horsepeople interested in participating in the appeal should contact the OHHA office. You may also choose to contact the racing commissioners and your provincial government representative to let them know your concerns.
