The Alberta racing industry has lost a powerful player with the death of Jack Nichol on Friday, October 17.

Thehorses.com has reported that Nichol died at the age of 72. The following is a statement from Les Butler, a vice-president at Northlands Park.

"Jack was a prominent player in the horse racing industry. In Western Canada he pioneered the collecting, keeping and printing of past performance lines through the company he founded, Western Program Register. Jack was the Racing Manager at Northlands for eight years. He also served as CEO of The Alberta Racing Corporation and President of Racetracks of Canada.

"Jack came from a distinguished thoroughbred racing family and owned many distinguished thoroughbreds himself. Jack's grandfather campaigned the fabled Spangled Jimmy, a horse immortalized here at Northlands by having a stake race named in his honor. Jack also owned standardbred racehorses through the years.

"Jack is already missed. The prayers and condolences of the entire horse racing industry go out to his wife, Lorretta, his son Jimmy and his daughters Leanne and Laurie."
