Hughes Suffers Broken Leg

Dave Gilders of Kawartha Downs has told Trot Insider that horseman Kurt Hughes suffered a small fracture to a fibula -- a non-weight-bearing lower leg bone -- as a result to a multi-horse accident last night at the Fraserville, ON oval.

In total, five horses fell and the race was declared a 'no contest' by the presiding Ontario Racing Commission judges. Hughes was taken to local hospital after the incident.

Lily Of My Valley (driven by Hughes) made a break and fell while on the lead in the early stages of the mile, and that led to a chain reaction of interference to trailing horses and drivers.

Gilders told Trot Insider that Hughes will have to wear an air cast for roughly six weeks and that the driver is in good spirits.

None of the other drivers were injured in the mishap, and none of the horses suffered serious injuries.
