A set of Trillium Series events for three-year-old trotting fillies were contested at Woodbine Racetrack earlier this evening, with Countess Stormont upsetting the applecart and Whatta Hotty prevailing at a microscopic price in their respective assignments.
Countess Stormont turned a pocket trip behind the odds-on favourite into a sharp score in the opening division for driver Jonathan Drury. She went off at odds of 14-1.
Drury hustled the Stormont Meadow's homebred to the engine and took the field past the quarter pole in :27 seconds before releasing Warrawee June, who was sent off as the 3-5 choice, to the lead. That filly rolled the field through middle splits of :57 and 1:27.3 before being overhauled by Stormont Countess in the closing strides.
Warrawee June managed to hold on for the runner-up award in the $35,273 affair and Duchessofnorthyork rounded out the top three.
The Norm Jones pupil, who went 0-for-10 as a rookie, now owns a 5-2-4 record this season from 24 attempts. The lion's share of the purse lifted her lifetime earnings to $129,546.
Whatta Hotty was a dominant winner in the other split, driving off in deep stretch for a 1:56.4 score for the father/son duo of trainer/co-owner Jim Whelan and driver Garrett Whelan.
The elder Whelan, who shares ownership on the high-profile homebred with Terry & Mary & Clarence Devos of Langton, ON, watched the daughter of Yankee Paco easily wear down the pacesetter before driving away to win by a comfortable margin.
Good Common Cents came on late to grab the runner-up award while Torch has to settle for the show dough in the $35,273 affair.
It was the fifth win of the season in 15 tries for Whatta Hotty, who upped her lifetime earnings to $347,695 with the winning effort.
