Deep Finesse, a two-year-old pacing sensation, will take centre stage in the Island Breeders Championships Saturday afternoon at the Charlottetown Driving Park. First race post time for the finals, dubbed Super Saturdays, is 1:00 p.m.
The action will be carried world-wide on the Aliant Race Day show beginning at 12:45 p.m. (AST).
It's been a profitable season for Deep Finesse and owner, trainer, driver Phil Pinkney. He bankrolled nearly $80,000, won every major event in the Maritimes and if he wins the $13,000 final in Race 10 -- scheduled for post at 3:20 p.m. -- it will be his 14th straight win. Talk about headlines. The son of Western Paradise drew post 8.
Darko is the early favourite in the final for two-year-old fillies. Owner Ralph Annear of Monatgue, PEI has the services of the driving park's top driver, Kenny Arsenault. The filly won her last start in Truro in an impressive 1:57.4.
The Ultimate Stable of Dieppe, NB has Tobins Paradise in the three-year-old filly final. Trainer Sifroi Melanson has teamed up with driver Todd Trites. Trites is the top driver in the Maritimes this season with 172 winners out of 667 drives. His driving percentage is at a sparkling .401.
Riccaras Sun is the top choice in the colt division. With regular pilot Kenny Arsenault committed to drive Bo Butler, owner Ken MacInnis and trainer Trevor Hicken turned to catch-driver Brian MacPhee. MacPhee guided him to a 1:58 victory back in September so the two know each other well.
The trotters are also in the spotlight with Dunmore Laird and Earl Smith posted as the morning line favourite in his division, while Saulsbrook Balance goes after his fourth straight from the rail for trainer-owner Russell Newman of North Sydney, NS.
