Dates Announced For 2009 SC Horse Sales

Standardbred Canada today released the dates for its 2009 horse sales. Heather Reid, SC sales manager, told Trot Insider that most of the 2009 sale dates will be similar to previous years.

Further, Reid confirmed that all SC sales will be held at Flamboro Downs, where a newly-refurbished sales pavilion has been customized to host Standardbred Canada's horse sales. Feedback to Reid has indicated that customers are extremely happy with the new location, as it is easy to get to and very central. She also stated that consignors have applauded the venue and its environment respecting the health of the horses.

The 2009 Sales season will start with the February Freeze Mixed Sale on Sunday, February 22. This winter sale has proven to be popular for both consignors and buyers. In 2008, 161 horses were auctioned, with Neil Dominique being sold for $70,000. He went on to win the Western Canada Pacing Derby in Edmonton for the new owners.

New for 2009 will be the merger of the Twos in Training sale with the Spring Fling Mixed Sale, to be held in June. Reid said that although SC has had a Twos in Training sale for the last three consecutive years, they did open it up in 2008 to include supplemental racehorses. With having a permanent facility at Flamboro, two-year-olds can train or 'baby' race at 10:30 a.m. and be part of the mixed sale that will commence at 12:00 noon. The Flamboro location provides permanent stabling and there is no need to stable in the race paddock, as done previously when the sale was held at Mohawk Racetrack.

The 2009 Canadian Open Yearling sale will be held on the traditional date of Sunday, September 13, 2009. Depending on the number of entries received, the sale could easily be expanded to accommodate all entries. Reid stated that, if needed, the Canadian Open can become a two-day sale, Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, selling approximately 150 yearlings each day.

In 2009, the Fall Extravaganza Mixed Sale will be moved one week earlier from the Saturday before Harrisburg. Moving to an October 25 date is more traditional with Standardbred Canada's sale date of a number of years ago, and will ease the time constraints of consignors and buyers who participate in both the Fall Extravaganza and Harrisburg.
