Fans at Hippodrome de Montreal were treated to a stakes-filled Sunday program earlier this afternoon, as the Quebec oval rolled out the red carpet for a long list of pacing and trotting stars.
The richest event on the matinee program - the $100,000 Lucien Bombardier Stakes for two-year-old pacing fillies – saw Culotte pull off an 11-1 upset for trainer Claude Cadieux and driver Sylvain Filion.
The Real Artist miss took full advantage of a second-over trip en route to posting a neck victory in a career-best clocking of 1:56.2. Tutu Hanover, who was sent off as the even-money favourite, finished second and Sharknfestedwaters was third.
Gestion Jean Yves Blais of Montreal, Quebec owns the filly, who has put together a 2-3-0 record in her first six starts. The $50,000 payday bumped her bankroll to $60,036.
Tuscan Gal also picked up a healthy paycheque earlier this afternoon thanks to her lifetime best performance of 1:57.4 in the $72,000 Roger White Trot for two-year-old trotting fillies.
The Andover Hall youngster overcame Post 12 to draw off to win by more than two lengths for driver Sylvain Filion and trainer Mark Steacy. Easter Bonnet was second best and Beltane Hanover rounded out the top three in the 12-filly affair.
Hudson Standrdbrd Stb. Inc. of Ecurie Gaetan Bono Inc. of Quebec share ownership on the career winner of $74,980.
Reinsman Hanover got up in the final strides to take home top prize in the $60,000 Garland Lobell Trot for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings, winning for trainer Nicolas Vandenplas and driver Louis Baudron in 1:59.4.
The Andover Hall colt edged out longshot Aurevoir Gladiator by three-quarters of a length. Speculation held the lead at the head of the lane, but faded to finish third.
Reve Avec Moi Dreamwithme of Brigham, Quebec owns the youngster, who now boasts three wins in seven starts and a $73,542 bankroll.
Canaco Runner (1:59) and Noblesse (2:01.3) were winners in their respective $40,000 Elite divisions for two-year-old trotting fillies.
Style Semalu (1:56.2) and Voelz Hanover (1:53.1) captured their respective $30,000 Elite divisions for three-year-old pacing fillies.
