CTHS Preferred Sale Shows Positive Numbers

Last Saturday at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion, the 2008 Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale concluded the Preferred Session by selling a total of 153 thoroughbred yearlings for $1,309,200, up 5% from last year's total of 151 that sold for $1,247,000.

As well, this year's average of $8,557 was up 3.6% from last year's average of $8,258.

A dark bay colt, Who's Big Daddy, by Where's the Ring out of the multiple winning Tethra mare Cosa Rara, topped the Preferred Session, being bought by local trainer Scott Fairlie for $60,000 from the consignment of Gardiner Farms Limited, Agent.

The top selling filly of Saturday's session was a dark bay daughter of Grade 2 winner Kafwain, and is out of the With Approval mare Castle Mey. The yearling sold for $35,000 to Mike Lightner, Agent for Mary Surrency, and was consigned by Richard G. Hogan, Agent.

"Our numbers continue to show a strong interest in Ontario-breds," said Julie Coulter, general manager of the Ontario CTHS.

"Likewise, our lucrative Thoroughbred Improvement Program (TIP) has proven to be a strong selling point for all registered Ontario-breds."

Arrangements are now being made for the CTHS Winter Mixed Sale, which takes place Saturday, November 29 at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion at Woodbine Racetrack, in Toronto.

Entries close on October 1. Consisting of broodmares, stallions, stallion shares, weanlings, yearlings and horses of racing age. Catalogues are expected out in early November.
