Black Book Shifts Into Part 2

Today marks Day 4 of the Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The third and final yearling session concluded yesterday. The first of three mixed sessions is on the agenda for today, with hip numbers 1,140 through 1,539 scheduled to appear in the sales ring.

On Day 3, the final yearling session, Some Hearts walked away with the highest price of the session, as the full brother to 2008 two-year-old Western Heart (1:55.1 - $43,669) was purchased for $120,000. The son of Western Terror – Heart Ofthe Matter was purchased by Richard Norman of Allentown, New Jersey, who was acting as agent.

Prices were down significantly from the 2007 version of The Black Book. With 1,050 yearlings selling for $31.94 million, the average yearling price was $30,420, down from totals of $42.78 million overall and a yearling average of $40,824 a year ago.

The highlight of the Tuesday session (Day 2) was when Tony Alagna -- of Steger, Illinois, who was acting as agent -- signed the sales slip for Two Timer, an Andover Hall daughter that topped Day 2 as a $180,000 buy.

Two Timer is the second foal out of Gracious Marla, a Malabar Man sister to the dam of Snow White (1:52.4 - $1,443,551).

A total of 364 horses sold in Day 2 for a gross of $10.5 million. The average was $28,846. In 2007, the sale's second-day average rang in at $36,187.

A total of 731 horses were sold through the first two sessions for an average price of $36,493. The average for the first two days was down 25 per cent from the same period in '07, which saw an average price of $49,091.

Muscle Massive, a full brother to Muscle Mass (1:53.4 - $229,000), topped the Monday session (Day 1) when trainer Jimmy Takter bid $425,000 to land him. Muscle Massive is by Muscles Yankee and out of Graceful Touch.

A total of 368 yearlings went through the ring on Day 1, resulting in a gross of $16,167,200 and an average of $44,039. In 2007, the opening-day average was $62,361. In 2006, the opening-day average was $54,178.
