Saturday afternoon's Alberta Sires Stakes two-year-old filly winners were runaways as they combined for a 21 length win margin in the Alberta Starburst leg at Alberta Downs.
Sweet Sugar posted the largest win margin of the three $18,767 divisions as she romped to a 10 length triumph in 1:58.3 over the "good" surface. Philip Giesbrecht drove the Tajma Hall-Hide The Candy filly to her second win in a row for trainer Tim Brown and owners Sandra Brown of Langley, B.C. and Archie Melnyk of Sherwood Park, Alta.
Sweet Sugar traded turns on top with eventual runner-up Mystic Return (Keith Clark) through fractions of :29.3, 1:00 and 1:29.1 before drawing away in a :29.2 final quarter. R Js Diamond (Tyler Redwood) finished third.
Giesbrecht also drove Triple Action to a five and a half length victory in the final division for trainer Joe Ratchford and owner Raggs To Riches of Aidrie, Alta.
After leaving from post three and strolling through early fractions of :30.3 and 1:02, the Brandons Cowboy-The Three Of Us filly sprinted to three-quarters in 1:30.2 and used a :28.4 final kicker to secure the 1:59.1 triumph. Also a winner in the first leg of the ABSS, Triple Action defeated the streaking stakes winner Nighttraintovegas (Brandon Campbell) and Burner Baby (Connie Kolthammer).
In the other division, Make Three Wishes circled a field of six and drew away to win by five and a half lengths in 1:59.1. Trainer/driver Keith Clark owns the Brandons Cowboy-Make Some Noise miss with Robert Jones of Slave Lake, Alta. and John Hind of Calgary, Alta.
Make Three Wishes advanced from the backfield through fractions of :29, 1:00.3, and 1:29.3 before closing in :29.3 away from Kinda Funky (Gerry Hudon). Blue Monday (Connie Kolthammer) came on for third.
The two-year-old pacing fillies will return to Alberta Downs for the Alberta Stardust third leg on Saturday, September 28. Northlands Park will host the Battle of Alberta Super Finals on Saturday, November 2.
