After a disappointing seventh-place finish in last week’s Preferred 3 class at Grand River Raceway, Outlawgrabbingears returned to the oval Monday night with a vengeance.
Trainer/driver Paul Davies manufactured a front-stepping score with the gelding, and that was music to the ears of the favourite players who sent him off as the 1-2 favourite in the $8,500 affair for horse and gelding pacers.
Brave World hustled his way to the early lead, but Davies had Outlawgrabbingears powering up on the outside while racing parked past the first quarter in :28. Once he cleared to the lead he carved out middle panels of :58.3 and 1:26.4 before scooting home in :28.3 to win by a length over Brave World in 1:55.2. Better Be Gouda took home third prize.
Outlawgrabbingears, who is owned by Davies and partners Nicky Davies and Deborah Pinel, won for the fifth time this season and for the 27th time in his career. The five-year-old son of Smart Shark-Grand Slam Woman pushed his lifetime earnings over $330,000 with the win.
