Modern Best Beats The Boys

Modern Best ($4.20) lived up to favoured billing in Wednesday night's (Sept. 5) $1,150 featured winners-over pacing event at Inverness Raceway, and did so via a gritty first-over journey.

After getting away third in a :29.3 first quarter, Redmond Doucet set Modern Best into motion with over a circuit to go, and the pair duelled with Makes Me Stupid (Andrew MacLean) through middle splits of :59.1 and 1:29.2. The 10-year-old Modern Art mare put away the pacesetter on the final turn, but would have to contend with veteran Doubleshotascotch (Ryan Campbell) — who rallied off third-over cover — in the final furlong.

Modern Best held her ground to the end of a 1:59.1 mile, holding Doubleshotascotch three-quarters of a length at bay. Surrealist (Alex MacQuarrie) checked in third after stalking the winner's cover.

Stanley Harper trains 33-time winner Modern Best for owners Simon Poirier and Chad MacDonnell. The featured win capped a driving hat trick for Doucet on the seven-race card.
