With a trip of perfection, Stash It Away landed on top at the wire in the Labour Day Pace on a special Monday (Sept. 4) afternoon card at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.
Jaycob Sweet supplied the drive for trainer Kevin MacLean, steering Stash It Away to his 19th lifetime win for owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford, P.E.I.
Stash It Away, a son of Pang Shui, took a second-over tow behind Melody Maker (Dale Spence) and popped by in the stretch drive to win the $3,600 Preferred 2 Pace in 1:55.2. Melody Maker was second while Century Invictus (Jason Hughes) completed the triactor ticket.
Drivers Corey MacPherson and David Dowling shared the hot hands of the day, each scoring a driving grand slam.
MacPherson started off in race two winning with Dunsan Harry in the West Point Fire Department Pace (1:58.2) from the Saul Lanigan barn then followed it up in race six with the Dwane MacEachern-trained Doc Awesome (1:58.4). Howmac Exclusive (2:00.4) was a winner from his own barn while his fourth driving win was with Think Again (1:59.3) for trainer Don Sweet. MacPherson leads the driving standings at Red Shores Summerside with 41 wins on the season.
The historic oval played host to Volunteer Fire departments and also celebrated National Caretaker Appreciation Day presented by Standardbred Canada, Red Shores, PEI Harness Racing Industry Association and Prince County Horsemen’s Club.
Dowling started the winning later in the day with his first win aboard his own trainee Wickham (2:00.3) in race seven presented by Lennox Island Volunteer Fire Department. Shes Rockandfame (1:59.3) supplied win number two in race eight for trainer Mike Dowling then Nannie Bernice (1:57.4) took a two-hole ride to victory in race 11 for Janice Hubbard. Rock The Baby (1:56.3) was the final Dowling driven winner of the day from the Earl Watts operation at Windemere Farms.
Hughes also had three winners on the day driving Catchme If Lou Can (1:55.3) as part of a Ralph Sweet training double, Saulsbrook Honey (1:58.2) from his own stable and Saulsbrook Abbey (1:57.4) to give Saul Lanigan a double on the day as a conditioner.
