Web Cam Captures Slots Cup Final

Web Cam, a runner-up in three prior legs of the Slots Cup Series, picked the perfect time to step up his game on Saturday night in the $100,000 final at Hiawatha Horse Park

The four-year-old homebred son of Astreos-Ruby Cam settled into fourth position after leaving from Post 7 in the 10th race while inside starter Larjon Barty (Greg Dustin) controlled the tempo through early fractions of :26.1 and :55.2.

Favourite Cajon Thunder (J.R. Plante) advanced first over from fifth and pushed ahead of the early leader at the 1:24.1 three-quarters mark while Web Cam tipped into the outer flow and Every Day (Scott Coulter) fanned three-wide.

Web Cam and Terry Kerr swept up to take the lead in the stretch with Every Day threatening right there in second. The top two battled to the wire with Web Cam prevailing by three-quarters of a length in 1:54.3 over the 'good' surface for trainer David Drew. Cajon Thunder finished six lengths back in third.

Web Cam paid $13.40 to win as the 5-1 third choice in the field. He is owned by Dave Drew Associates Inc. of St. Catharines, Ont.

The bay gelding finished fourth in the first leg of the series on May 14 at Western Fair Raceway and followed that performance up with three second-place efforts on June 14 at Georgian Downs, June 25 at Hanover Raceway and July 22 at Grand River Raceway.

The win was his first of the season in 18 starts and fifth lifetime pushing his earnings to $93,810 for 2011 and $146,554 overall.

Fast Standin Still and driver Scott Coulter won the evening's $9,500 Preferred 3 Pace, the Mike MacLellan Memorial Pace, with a 1:54.2 front end effort. More Again (Jason Brewer) finished over three lengths behind in second and Live For Today (Dustin McClure) was third. Wayne Preszcator trains the six-year-old gelded son of Pro Bono Best-Jen And Lissy for the Secret Weapon Stables of Waterloo, Ont.
