Trainer Kelly Hoerdt collected three victories on the 10-race card Thursday night (Sept. 29) at Fraser Downs including a victory in one of the four stakes prelims and in the co-featured $10,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace.
Hoerdt's one win came in the second $15,000 division of the Mary Murphy opening leg when Tin Foil Hat was placed first via disqualification. The daughter of Custard The Dragon raced fifth while Memum Knowsnothing led to a :27.4 first quarter and through a :58.2 half. Hoerdt then tipped his charge off the pegs moving to three-quarters in 1:27 and marched towards the leader in the stretch to just miss victory by a nose in 1:56.2. However, an infraction disqualified Memum Knowsnothing to third, placing Tin Foil Hat first and pocket-sitter Angelsonthehorizon second.
Hoerdt co-owns Tin Foil Hat with owners Blair Corbeil and Fred Gilbert. She won her seventh race from 21 starts and has now earned $62,192. She paid $4.20 to win.
Century Mach scored in the race following for Hoerdt to take the $10,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace. The four-year-old mare by JK Royal Flush pulled first over after a :27 first quarter to press pacesetter Western Summit through a :57.2 half and by three-quarters in 1:25.4. She then scooted clear in the lane to a three-length victory in 1:54 with Moosette following her cover to take second and Glimpseofgoodness closing for third. Hoerdt owns the winner of 16 races from 47 starts and $88,583 who returned $2.20 to win.
Outlaw Endofanera ($3.10 to win) began the hat trick for Hoerdt after winning in Race 4 in a $7,000 conditioned pace.
Shoot The Whiskey swept to the lead after the quarter and strolled to a 1:55.3 victory in the first Mary Murphy division. Off the odds-on favourite, Shoot The Whiskey brushed from fourth to the lead after a :27.3 first quarter and slowed to a :58 half while quickening in the final stages. With Shes Bodacious charging first over to challenge into three-quarters in 1:27.1, Shoot The Whiskey braced for the fight and kicked for home with vigor to win by 1-1/4 lengths while Forever Furley gave pursuit from the pocket in third.
Jim Marino trains and co-owns Shoot The Whiskey with J J J Stables. The daughter of Shadow Play won her ninth race from 16 starts and has now earned $93,928. Brandon Campbell steered the $2.40 winner.
Campbell and Marino also teamed to take the first $15,000 division of the Robert Murphy Memorial a few races later. The Custard The Dragon colt circled from the pocket to the lead after a :28.3 first quarter and snagged a breather to a :59.1 half. So Strange swept off the pegs to attack Joe Rich as he sprinted to three-quarters in 1:27.4 before faltering and leaving Joe Rich alone. Joe Rich passed the beam 2-1/4 lengths better than the dead heat of Jimmyachance and Itll Be Fine in second.
Joe Rich races for owners J J J Stables, Jim Marino and Paul Sanders. He won his sixth race from 20 starts and has now earned $80,508. He paid $3.90 to win.
The other Robert Murphy Memorial division went to Lets Tie One On in 1:55.1. Driver Scott Knight sent the Vertical Horizon colt to the lead to a :27.2 first quarter and held full control of the tempo. By a :58.2 half, Lets Tie One On kept first-over challenger Joe Dimagio parked through three-quarters in 1:26.4 and maintained his advantage coming for home to win by 1-1/4 lengths over pocket-sitter Minnekhada Joe. Joe Dimagio settled for third.
Chris Lancaster conditions Lets Tie One On for owners Derek Gilbert and Kelly Hoerdt. He won his eighth race from 20 starts and has now earned $123,348. He paid $6 to win.
