Until a month ago not many people knew who Reverend Hanover was, but they know now.
The talented son of Sportswriter-Razzle My Tazzle romped to his third win in as many tries in a $105,000 OSS Gold Series division Monday evening at Mohawk Racetrack for trainer Casie Coleman and driver Chris Christoforou.
Seaforth shot to the top and had the field chasing him past the quarter pole in :26.1, but Reverend Hanover pocket popped in the backstretch and quickly brushed his way to the top. He led the field through middle splits of :55.1 and 1:23.4 before winning in under wraps fashion in 1:51.4. Manny In Sports was second under the line, with Bob Ben And John taking home the show dough.
Purchased for $24,000 from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale, Reverend Hanover bumped his cash stash to $93,500 with the win. The undefeated pacer is owned by West Wins Stable, Steve Calhoun and Anthony Beaton.
The second division for the colts and geldings went to Drachan Hanover and driver Rick Zeron in 1:51.4. It was a career-best clocking for the Marcel Barrieau-trained son of Jeremes Jet-Driven To Sin.
With fractions of :26.3, :54.3 and 1:23 in front of him, the colt rallied first-over and drew clear to win by 2-1/2 lengths over race favourite Moonwriter. Third prize went to Sportskeeper.
Nova Scotia partners Lloyd MacLean of Inverness and Kenneth Rankin of Port Morien share ownership on the youngster who now boasts a 3-2-1 record from seven lifetime starts. The $52,500 payday bumped his bankroll to $95,150 – not bad for a pacer that was purchased for a mere $4,500 from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale.
Monday’s card also featured a set of $105,000 OSS Gold Series divisions for two-year-old pacing fillies, and longshot players had their prayers answered in the first division thanks to a 34-1 upset in the first split.
Sylvain Filion hustled Wrangler Magic to the lead from Post 4 and the daughter of Mach Three-Ja El Shamrock rolled the field through fractions of :26.4, :56.2 and 1:25.2 before rocketing home in :28.1 en route to the 1:53.3 decision. It was 1-3/4 lengths back to runner-up Aintsheasweetie, with Solar Sister rounding out the top three finishers.
Stephane Larocque trains the homebred for Tom Kyron, Dr Maurice Stewart, Brian Paquet and Bayama Farms Inc. The lion’s share of the loot lifted her lifetime earnings over $100,000.
Capela captured the other division in 1:53.1 for driver James MacDonald and trainer Tony O’Sullivan.
The daughter of Sportswriter-Capelo Rose parked I Wonder Why to the quarter pole in :27.1 before releasing that foe to the front. I Wonder Why chopped out middle splits of :55.4 and 1:24.4 before coming under attack from Capela in the lane. Capela used a :28-second kick to win by 1-1/2 lengths over I Wonder Why, with Palette Tina taking home third prize.
Let It Ride Stables Inc of Florida and RBH Ventures of New York share ownership on the maiden-breaker who improved her record to 1-2-2 from six starts with the victory. The $52,500 payday bumped her bankroll to $91,690.
