Discus Hanover and driver Ron Harp charged late to capture the $11,487 Open Handicap Trot at Vernon Downs on Friday, Sept. 27.
Odds-on favourite Zapaca (Steeven Genois) was first to the quarter in :26.3 then backed down the pace to the half in :55.4 and three-quarters in 1:25.1. As the field reached the stretch, Valottalove (John MacDonald) popped the pocket and went all out after the leader while Discus Hanover made his move three-wide. Discus Hanover drifted very wide but still got by Zapaca to win in 1:55 by three-quarters of a length, with Valottalove finishing third.
Discus Hanover is a seven-year-old gelding by Credit Winner. He is owned by Phillip Hale and trainer David Dewhurst. Discus Hanover recorded his sixth win this season from 27 starts and his 47th career victory pushed his lifetime earnings over the $300,000 mark.
Discus Hanover paid $6.60 to win as the 2-1 second choice.
