Sweet Like Candy Romps To Renkers Win

Sweet Like Candy and driver Serge Masse went wire-to-wire in the $50,000 Sharon Renkers Memorial Final for three-year-old pacing fillies on Friday night at Fraser Downs.

With the inside post advantage, Sweet Like Candy established the lead and cruised through fractions of :27.2, :59 and 1:28.1 over a sloppy track en route to the 1:57.2 three and three-quarter length triumph with fellow elimination winners Yanotherhos and Brad Watt following for second. Im Tu Die For and Glenn White came on for third.

Sweet Like Candy paid $2.60 to win as the 1-5 race favourite.

Shelly Arsenault trains the American Ideal filly for owner Roger McDow of Las Vegas, Nevada. The victory was the richest yet for Sweet Like Candy, also a winner of the Penny Bath and Marion Young Memorial earlier this year. She has won nine of her 26 races with the latest pushing her career bankroll to $74,238.

Friday was bittersweet for horsemen Bill Davis as he earned a training triple on the card although his stakes entry, the second choice in the wagering, finished out of the money. Hurt So Bad (Davis) broke stride from third into the first turn of the Renkers and caused interference to the rest of the field. As a result, her entrymate, first over attacker Shadow Time (Jim Marino), was seventh-placed-eighth. Davis' Friday winners were Cenalta Wizard ($3), the James Burke-driven Cenalta Pride ($8) and I Dont Really Care ($2.80).

Masse and Arsenault were also victorious on Friday with veteran pacer Stiletto Hall ($5.40).

In other action, Susan Allan earned her first training win with driver Rick White guiding Kismyjet ($11.40) to a 1:57.3 five length victory in the fifth race claiming event.
