The second qualifier conducted during the morning session on Friday, Sept. 27 at Woodbine Mohawk Park had the depth of an Ontario Sires Stakes Gold leg for two-year-old male pacers.
Four of the six colts entered in Friday's second qualifier had won Gold events this year, with another a Gold leg starter. The final OSS Gold leg is set for next Thursday, Oct. 3 at Mohawk, so it's safe to say that this dash was a tightener for that Thursday tilt.
Hide The Wick set the tempo in the Friday qualifier for driver Trevor Henry, followed by formidable foes Fifth And Five (Jody Jamieson), Stonebridge Wizard (Doug McNair) and Allstar Maniac (James MacDonald). Those four freshmen stayed in that order through fractions of :29, :58.2 and 1:27.2, and the the fight was on down the stretch. Fifth And Five angled out from the pocket, and Allstar Maniac fanned out wider from fourth. A :26.4 final quarter from Fifth And Five sealed the deal here, holding off a strong rally from Allstar Maniac to win by a neck in 1:54.2. Hide The Wick was 1-1/2 lengths back of the front pair.
Fifth And Five (Bettors Delight - Filou Fly Fast) sports a 1:51.4f mark taken at Grand River Raceway along with $147,110 in earnings and a 2-2-1 summary from seven starts for trainer / co-owner Carl Jamieson of Puslinch, Ont. and co-owners 1140545 Ontario Ltd. of Guelph, Ont. and Trevor Edwards of Kirkton, Ont.
