Mcjestic ($8.40) and driver Jason Hughes prevailed in a close finish to win Saturday's featured $2,250 Preferred 2 Pace at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
After following throughout the mile in fourth-place, Mcjestic got by the leaders late to win in 1:56.1. The Troy Murray-trained and owned gelding edged out pocket-sitter Artners In Crime by a head while the popular pacesetter, Forever Paradise, finished three-quarters of a length back in third.
The win was the third on the card for Hughes, who emerged from a tie with Marc Campbell atop the track's 2015 leaderboard with his Saturday successes. Hughes now has 75 wins to lead all drivers at the Charlottetown oval this year while Campbell's win count held at 72.
Wendell MacDonald's Caliban Hanover ($10.90) won the $1,950 Open Trot by two and a half lengths over favourite Thunderaway in a season's-best 2:01.2. Kicking off his own three-win night, Walter Cheverie catch-drove the veteran trotter for trainer Ronnie Gass.
In the $2,350 Fillies & Mares Open Pace, General Luckypercy ($10.60) converted off a pocket trip to end Ramblinglily's win streak. Ramblinglily, who had seven wins in a row entering the race, finished one length behind the 1:57.1 winner while For All We Know was third after challenging first over. General Luckypercy is campaigned by the Matheson family -- driver Ron and his children, trainer Jackie and owner Jodi Lynn.
