For the second week-in-a-row the drive to Sudbury proved to be a profitable one for trainer Shane Arsenault and driver Dave Boughton who teamed up to sweep the Champions Trot with Lexis D J.
After capturing his $15,000 elimination of the Champions Trot last Wednesday in 1:57.1, the five-year-old son of Amigo Hall-Lexus Lulu returned to the half-mile oval and turned in a decisive victory in the rich final.
Boughton got away fourth with Lexis D J, who watched Long Ago fire to the lead and lay down an opening quarter in :28.2. Lexis D J commenced his first-over rally on the way to the half, while Long Ago continued to roll the field to the mid-way point in :58.2. Lexis D J was able to duck into the two-hole going to the three-quarter pole, which was reached by Long Ago in 1:28. Boughton angled Lexis D J back the outside and quickly drew away from the field thanks to a :29-second closing panel. He was 4-1/4 lengths better than Ill Tell You What in 1:57.2. Lexis D J’s stablemate, Mr Joe Sixpack, grabbed the show dough.
Sent off as the even-money favourite, Lexis D J won for the 10th time this season and for the 25th time in his career. The career winner of $298,400 is owned by Lou Arsenault of Freelton and Brandon Arsenault of Waterdown, ON
